Turkish franchise brands’ plans for European growth were discussed at the Bayim Olur musun? franchise fair in Istanbul, with attention not just to opening new outlets but also to what it takes to establish a lasting local presence. The European session of Franchise Market Talks stressed the importance of planning country selection, local partnerships, tax and administrative obligations, and market adaptation together.
European expansion: understanding the market before opening an outlet
According to a report published by Para magazine on 20 October 2026, the session entitled “Expanding into Europe through Franchising: Opening an Outlet or Winning a Market?” focused on the preparation Turkish brands need for sustained growth in Europe. At the heart of the discussion was the distinction between opening a business in a country and building a long-term operating structure there.
Country selection, local partnerships, tax and administrative obligations, and adaptation to the market were treated not as separate decisions but as issues requiring coordinated planning. European expansion was therefore discussed as a growth strategy extending beyond the location of a new outlet or the size of the investment.
The wider message at the fair for brands seeking to expand abroad reinforced this approach: the aim should not simply be to open an outlet, but to understand the local market and build a system that works over the long term. The European session broadened the scope of the preparation needed before deciding to open.
In this context, a local partnership was seen as more than simply making a business connection. It needed to be considered alongside country selection and market adaptation. The session’s central message was that pursuing European growth requires more comprehensive planning than a single decision to open an outlet.
International growth across a four-day programme
The discussions on European expansion formed part of the inaugural Franchise Market Talks – The Ecosystem’s Ideas Stage programme, held with Branding Türkiye as strategic partner. The programme hosted 17 sessions over four days, exploring different aspects of growth, from investment decisions to business management.
Organised by Medyafors, with Standards and Partners as lead sponsor, the fair brought brands from food and restaurant chains, retail, education, property, logistics, technology and services together with entrepreneurs and investors. This breadth ensured that discussions of international growth extended across multiple sectors.
Alongside Europe, the Gulf also featured on the fair’s international agenda. A delegation from the Emirates Franchise Association took part in discussions on master franchise, investment and strategic partnership opportunities between Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates. The European session, meanwhile, focused on the preparation Turkish brands need to enter a new market and achieve sustained growth there.
Addressing both regions at the same fair allowed international growth to be explored through different forms of cooperation. For Europe, the key point was that choosing a country and a partner should not be separated from compliance obligations and local adaptation. The discussion therefore covered not only growth ambitions but also how to build the structure needed to support them.
The operational side of sustained growth
The European session’s emphasis on building a long-term system also reflected the fair’s wider agenda. From the first day, a recurring message was that franchise growth cannot be measured solely by new outlet openings. The franchise community’s discussions extended beyond openings to the conditions needed to keep businesses operating.
Franchise Market Talks sessions covered tracking outlet closure data, transparent contracts and cost structures, staff retention, data-led site selection, and the long-term responsibilities in the relationship between franchisor and franchisee. Together, these topics framed growth as a decision involving much more than the initial investment.
On the third day, the programme explored the use of location data and on-the-ground experience in decisions about new outlets, as well as multi-brand management and multi-site operations. The final day addressed standardised and smart operating systems designed to reduce reliance on individual staff members. Within this broader programme, European expansion was considered alongside robust systems and operational discipline.
The next step after discussions at the fair
Throughout the fair, discussions at exhibition stands covered investment budgets, franchise and dealership terms, location requirements, operating models and growth plans. Some contacts moved into follow-up discussions about potential dealership and franchise agreements, creating new business connections for brands to pursue after the event.
The follow-up activity described in the report should be distinguished from completed agreements. Similarly, the European expansion session was less about announcing openings than identifying the issues brands need to address when preparing their international growth plans.
Practical takeaway: Brands planning franchise growth in Europe should consider country selection, local partnerships, tax and administrative obligations, and market adaptation within the same planning process as their outlet targets. The approach highlighted at the fair was to put the conditions for a lasting presence in place before opening.
