Dollarstore is launching Spar’s own-label products in its more than 135 Swedish shops. The initial range comprises 70 products, including pasta, crisps, olive oil and Tex-Mex foods. For those following the Swedish franchise market, the news illustrates how a franchise brand can reach customers through a product partnership rather than by opening shops under its own name.
70 products in the initial launch
According to a report in Dagligvarunytt on 27 October, the launch follows an earlier cooperation agreement between Dollarstore and Spar. The agreement covers the introduction of Spar’s own-label products to the Swedish market. It is now taking shape with an initial range to be stocked in Dollarstore shops.
The 70 products span several grocery categories, including pasta, olive oil, crisps and Tex-Mex foods. This is therefore not a launch confined to a single category, but one covering several parts of the grocery range. The named items are examples of the launch range, not a complete product list.
Dollarstore’s Swedish retail network gives the launch a reach of more than 135 outlets. Spar products are being introduced into existing Dollarstore shops. The announcement therefore concerns a new offering within an established retail network, not a planned series of shop openings. That distinction is important when assessing what Spar’s presence in Sweden means in this instance.
The link through owner Tokmanni
Behind the partnership is a connection between Dollarstore’s owner and Spar. Tokmanni holds the Finnish licence for Spar, the grocery chain and franchise brand. The Swedish launch, meanwhile, is taking place under Dollarstore’s cooperation agreement covering Spar’s own-label products.
In a statement, Kim Strömsholm, head of the grocery range at Tokmanni, explains how experience in Finland has informed the launch:
Among the first Spar products being launched at Dollarstore are several grocery items that have already become customer favourites in Finland.
The statement links the initial Swedish range to products already sold in Finland. It does not, however, indicate how Swedish customers will respond. Dollarstore says the initial launch will be evaluated carefully, making this an important step before the range is developed further.
For the franchise sector, the owner’s role is particularly relevant. There is both a licensing relationship in Finland and a product partnership in Sweden. Both form part of the same story, but they should not be presented as a single Swedish franchise agreement.
A product partnership is not a shop conversion
The presence of a franchise brand’s products on another chain’s shelves should be distinguished from the establishment of its retail format. The announced Swedish arrangement concerns Spar’s own-label products being sold at Dollarstore. It provides no basis for describing Dollarstore’s Swedish shops as Spar shops or new Spar franchises.
For customers, the practical change is access to Spar-branded products in existing Dollarstore shops. For those tracking brands’ entry into a market, the focus here is therefore on distribution reach: 70 products are being introduced through a network of more than 135 Swedish outlets.
The news also illustrates why market-entry announcements need careful reading within the franchise sector. A brand can appear in a shop’s range without changing that shop’s name or operating model. In this case, the announcement concerns an own-label product launch. Sticking to that description makes it easier to distinguish product distribution from expansion through new franchisees.
Evaluation before further range development
Dollarstore aims to expand the range gradually. At the same time, the company stresses that the initial launch will be evaluated carefully. The 70 products are therefore a first step, while further expansion of the range remains an ambition.
Customer response to the initial range will be a key development to watch. For now, the intention to add more products should be kept separate from the scale of the initial launch. What has been presented is a starting range, a Swedish sales channel and an intention to develop the offering following evaluation.
Practical takeaway: For franchisors and franchisees monitoring Spar’s presence in Sweden, this is primarily a product-range announcement. Distinguish between licensing, product partnerships and franchise expansion when assessing what such a launch means for your own business.
