Cafetaria De Smuller, a Dutch snack bar in Helmond, has been operating as Kwalitaria Helmond since early October. After twenty years as an independent business owner, Bram Wannemakers has chosen to join the franchise network. The revamped outlet officially opened its doors on Wednesday 7 October 2026. Support with running the business and a wider menu were the main reasons behind his decision.
Behind-the-scenes support
For Wannemakers, the move means a different way of running his business, but not stepping away from the day-to-day work in his snack bar. He still enjoys frying chips himself most of all. Having spent twenty years handling both the work on the premises and the organisation behind the scenes, he will now receive support from Kwalitaria.
In a report published by Frituurwereld on 15 October, he explains his decision: “From marketing and purchasing to product quality, a lot of work is being taken off my hands. That means I can continue to focus on what happens in the shop every day.”
Joining the network is therefore about more than putting a new name above the door. For Wannemakers, sharing the workload is an important part of the move. Marketing, purchasing and product quality are the specific areas in which he highlights support, allowing him to keep his attention on day-to-day operations.
The Helmond opening brings an established business and an experienced owner into the franchise network. This is not someone opening a snack bar for the first time, but an entrepreneur choosing to work within a franchise after two decades of independence.
More choice, including lunch
Alongside support, the product range played a major role in the decision. Wannemakers singles out Kwalitaria’s changing seasonal products as particularly appealing. “The range really appeals to me, especially the regularly changing seasonal products. I think Kwalitaria will be a great addition to the neighbourhood,” he says.
The conversion brings a wider menu to the outlet. Customers can choose from burgers, filled rolls, meal deals and vegetarian dishes. According to the report, the addition of lunch dishes also opens up new opportunities for the snack bar.
The change therefore affects both the support available to the owner and the choice available to customers. The familiar owner remains in place, while the menu expands to include the franchise’s products. That distinction matters: this is about continuing an existing business in a new format.
The revamped snack bar also has longer opening hours. Together with the lunch menu, these form part of its fresh start. The report does not give specific opening times.
Manager looks towards owning a business
The transition is also significant for manager Guus Veldhof. He has worked at the snack bar for a year and a half and was closely involved in its conversion to Kwalitaria. He describes the change as “a real breath of fresh air”.
His immediate aim is to continue developing Kwalitaria Helmond alongside Wannemakers. He also has a personal ambition: to open an outlet of his own one day. The training opportunities within the franchise are particularly appealing to him.
“What I like is that Kwalitaria offers training opportunities that will allow me to progress from manager to franchisee,” says Veldhof. For him, the move is not just about a revamped workplace, but also a potential next step in his career.
An outlet of his own remains a future ambition, rather than an announced opening. For now, the concrete step is working with Wannemakers in Helmond. This brings two different perspectives together in one outlet: an experienced owner seeking support, and a manager who sees opportunities to develop towards running his own business.
Opening offers for the neighbourhood
The official opening on 7 October was celebrated with an hour of free chips for local residents. Further promotions were also announced. In October, free soft-serve ice cream is being handed out for an hour every Wednesday. In November, this will be followed by an hour of free frikandellen — Dutch skinless minced-meat sausages — every Wednesday.
These offers give the neighbourhood a visible introduction to the change from De Smuller to Kwalitaria Helmond. Behind the celebrations are the factors that led Wannemakers to join: support, a wider range and the freedom to stay focused on his business.
Practical takeaway: if you are considering bringing an existing business into a franchise network, this move offers useful points for discussion: which tasks will the franchisor take off your hands, what will change for customers, and what development opportunities will the team have?
