Osouji Honpo tops generative AI franchise mentions in September 2026 survey

Osouji Honpo was the most frequently mentioned brand in generative AI responses in Branding Works’ September 2026 survey. Different leaders on ChatGPT and Gemini highlight the need to interpret AI results carefully when exploring franchise opportunities in Japan.

Osouji Honpo tops generative AI franchise mentions in September 2026 survey

Which brands appear when generative AI is asked, “Which franchises would you recommend?” In its September 2026 tracking survey, published on 12 October, Branding Works found that Osouji Honpo led with a mention rate of 37.0%. However, different brands topped the results for ChatGPT and Gemini. For those exploring Japan’s franchise market, the findings offer a useful perspective on how AI introduces people to brands.

Osouji Honpo at 37.0%, Otakaraya at 31.5%

Branding Works, based in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, regularly tracks which companies generative AI names in response to requests for franchise recommendations. Its latest release covers September 2026 and reports both the rate at which brands were mentioned and their average position within responses.

The top 10 brands by mention rate were as follows.

RankBrandMention rateAverage position in responses
1Osouji Honpo37.0%2.0
2Otakaraya31.5%2.9
3Kaitori Daikichi25.9%2.6
4Osouji Kakumei22.2%3.2
5Daikokuya18.5%3.5
6Life Deli14.8%6.9
7Takeda Juku14.8%8.9
8WAKABA13.0%4.6
9Magokoro Bento13.0%6.9
107-Eleven11.1%7.8

Osouji Honpo led second-placed Otakaraya by 5.5 percentage points. Among the 10 brands in the table, it also had the highest average placement within responses.

Mention frequency and position within an answer are, however, different measures. Otakaraya was mentioned more frequently than Kaitori Daikichi, but Kaitori Daikichi appeared earlier on average. Life Deli and Takeda Juku also shared a mention rate of 14.8%, yet differed in their average positions. When interpreting the results, it is important to distinguish between whether a brand is named and where it appears in the answer.

Different leaders on ChatGPT and Gemini

Broken down by AI service, 7-Eleven had the highest mention rate on ChatGPT at 11.1%, while Osouji Honpo led on Gemini at 74.0%. These service-level figures reveal differences that are less apparent in the overall ranking.

Although 7-Eleven ranked tenth overall, it topped the ChatGPT results. Conversely, overall leader Osouji Honpo recorded a high mention rate on Gemini. At least in this survey, the brand introduced most frequently varied according to the AI service used.

For prospective franchisees, the key is not to treat a single answer as a comprehensive assessment of the franchise market. The survey measured brands’ appearances in responses to particular questions, not their suitability for an individual applicant’s budget, experience or preferred location.

Nor can the leading brands and their mention rates alone establish which service is better for choosing a franchise. A starting point for discovering brands should be treated separately from the evidence needed to decide whether to sign an agreement.

web-repo.jp was the most frequently cited source

The survey also tracked the sources AI cited to support its answers. The most frequently cited was web-repo.jp, with an 8.8% share of citations.

Citation share is a separate measure from brand mention rate. Osouji Honpo’s 37.0% mention rate reflects its appearances in answers, while web-repo.jp’s 8.8% reflects its share as a cited source. The two cannot be compared on the same scale.

Franchisors using these findings to inform publicity or franchisee recruitment should look beyond whether their brand appears and check which information underpins the descriptions. It is also essential to verify that descriptions of franchise terms and support match the actual agreement.

For prospective franchisees, a practical approach is to compare the AI’s explanation with the cited material, then check the franchisor’s official documents and agreement. Being cited does not, in itself, demonstrate favourable contract terms or profitability after opening.

Separate mention rankings from franchise decisions

This release captures how brands appeared in generative AI responses. It does not rank them by outlet numbers, turnover, franchisee profits or owner satisfaction. Even though the questions sought “recommendations”, mention rates cannot be treated as probabilities of business success or measures of a franchise’s relative merits.

This is also a tracking survey for September 2026. These rankings alone should not be taken as evidence that a brand’s reputation is improving over the long term or that support among prospective franchisees is growing. Appearing in AI answers is different from prompting people to make enquiries or sign agreements.

For those considering Japan’s franchise market, the survey is more useful as a starting point for research than as a basis for a final decision. Comparisons become more meaningful when each shortlisted brand’s initial investment, ongoing costs, scope of franchisor support, operating territory, and renewal and termination terms are checked individually.

The practical takeaway is to use AI mention rankings to discover potential options, but base the decision to join a franchise on its contractual terms and financial projections. Franchisors and prospective franchisees alike should distinguish between “frequently recommended” and “right for me”.
