HILLS BOWL, an açaí and salad bowl specialist founded in Osaka’s Minamihorie district, is aiming to open new outlets in Kagoshima and Fukuoka by the end of 2026. In an announcement on 30 October, the brand said its own website analytics and franchise enquiry figures showed strong interest from Kyushu, Japan’s south-western main island. Alongside preparations for the openings, it is recruiting prospective franchisees across Japan.
Kagoshima and Fukuoka outlets remain in preparation
The announcement concerns preparations for new outlets in Kagoshima and Fukuoka. Both are targeting openings by the end of 2026 as part of the brand’s expansion into Kyushu.
It is important to distinguish a target opening date from the actual start of trading. The announcement reports progress towards opening the outlets; it does not say that either is already operating. Anyone planning a visit should look out for confirmed opening dates and outlet details.
The nationwide franchise recruitment campaign should also be considered separately from these two planned openings. Although HILLS BOWL is recruiting franchisees, this announcement alone does not establish that the Kagoshima and Fukuoka outlets will be franchised. Prospective franchisees should clarify the brand’s expansion plans and which outlets franchisees will be responsible for operating.
Franchise enquiries from Kagoshima around eight times those from Osaka
The brand cited its own regional response figures as background to the planned openings. According to the announcement, franchise enquiries from Kagoshima Prefecture were around eight times those from Osaka Prefecture.
It also reported that visits to its Kyushu outlet pages exceeded nine times those to the Tokyo outlet pages used for comparison. As the Osaka-founded brand pursues expansion into Kyushu, it has disclosed two indicators: enquiries from prospective franchisees and website traffic.
However, these ratios compare different things. The roughly eightfold figure compares franchise enquiries from Kagoshima and Osaka prefectures, while the more-than-ninefold figure compares traffic to Kyushu outlet pages with traffic to selected Tokyo outlet pages. They should not be treated as measurements of the same behaviour across equivalent geographical areas.
Both figures also come from the brand’s internal data. They are not market statistics showing overall demand for açaí bowls in Kyushu or the size of the region’s restaurant sales market. Enquiries indicate interest in becoming a franchisee, but they are distinct from signed agreements or completed openings. Page views likewise do not demonstrate visits or purchases. When assessing a franchise opportunity, it is important to separate attention from business performance.
Delivery platform achievements also highlighted
HILLS BOWL specialises in açaí bowls and salad bowls. The announcement also highlighted its reported achievements of ranking first for overall ratings on Uber Eats and first in the repeat-order rankings on the delivery platform menu.
These are achievements cited by the brand, but they do not mean it currently holds the same positions in every area. The geographical coverage, measurement period and other limits of the rankings should be checked. Ratings earned at existing outlets are also not equivalent to results at a new location.
For anyone considering an outlet in Kyushu, delivery platform ratings are best treated as one source of insight into how the brand reaches and serves customers. Checking the circumstances behind those ratings, as well as the results themselves, will make it easier to assess their relevance to a proposed outlet.
What the announcement establishes is that the brand is preparing new openings and recruiting franchisees while presenting delivery platform achievements and regional interest data. That information alone is not enough to judge a new outlet’s likely sales or profitability.
Assess nationwide recruitment against local conditions
Franchise recruitment covers all of Japan, not just Kyushu. Preparations in Kagoshima and Fukuoka represent specific steps in regional expansion, while the nationwide campaign seeks prospective franchisees from other areas as well.
For the franchise sector, this is a useful example of a franchisor publishing regional enquiry and website traffic figures to explain the background to its recruitment activity. Prospective franchisees, however, should investigate local conditions rather than assume their proposed location will attract the same level of interest.
In practical terms, they should ask for the enquiry measurement period, absolute enquiry numbers and the basis of the website traffic comparisons. They should then separately examine the initial investment, ongoing costs, product supply arrangements, training and post-opening support to develop a concrete business plan. None of these can be inferred from the published ratios; they require confirmation from the franchisor.
Practical takeaway: Interest from Kyushu provides a starting point for due diligence, not a conclusion on whether to invest. Follow updates on the Kagoshima and Fukuoka openings, while separately checking the basis of the interest figures and the costs and operating conditions at your own proposed location.
