Granier arrives in Barquisimeto through a partnership with Maraplus

Spanish bakery and pastry chain Granier has arrived in Barquisimeto through a partnership with Maraplus, which has opened its first branch in Venezuela’s Lara state. Located on Avenida Los Leones, the premises combine the Venezuelan pharmacy chain’s offering with beauty and food outlets. For the franchise sector, the key development is Granier’s presence in this shared retail space.

A new opening in eastern Barquisimeto

The new Maraplus branch, whose opening was reported on 29 October, is the chain’s 23rd. It joins the brand’s 17 shops in Zulia and five in Caracas, marking its entry into Lara state.

The premises are on Avenida Los Leones in eastern Barquisimeto. The advertised opening hours are 7 am to 11 pm, Monday to Sunday, providing a broad window for customers to shop throughout the day.

The opening brings several offerings together under one roof. Alongside Maraplus, it includes Rincón Nude, dedicated to beauty and wellbeing; Dog Plus, serving Maracaibo-style hot dogs; and the partnership with Granier. There is also an area where customers can enjoy coffee and freshly baked goods.

The branch count refers to Maraplus and should not be taken as the size of Granier’s network in Venezuela. The specific news for the Spanish brand is its arrival in Lara’s state capital through this collaboration.

Granier brings European baking to the mix

Granier’s involvement is through a partnership with its master franchisee in Venezuela. According to information released about the opening, the Spanish bakery and pastry business has been operating in the country for more than five years.

Raúl Aguilar, general manager of the franchise in Venezuela, explained at the opening that the aim is to bring together Venezuelan coffee traditions and European baking. This combination makes coffee and bakery products part of the experience of visiting the new premises.

The announcement presents Granier’s arrival as a commercial partnership tied to the Maraplus branch. It does not mean that the entire establishment is a franchise of the Spanish brand. This distinction clarifies the scope of the arrangement: a Venezuelan chain is adding an international brand to its offering, with that brand represented locally by a master franchisee.

For those following new openings in the franchise sector, this is the central development, rather than the expansion of the host chain’s network.

Beauty, food and coffee in one visit

At the opening, Maraplus ambassador Albany Ávila highlighted the variety, competitive prices and distinct areas within the premises as elements of its retail offering. These are claims made by the brand, not measured results from the newly opened operation.

Rincón Nude houses the beauty and wellbeing offering, while Dog Plus provides Maracaibo-style fast food. Granier adds Spanish bread and pastries to a branch that also has a space for enjoying coffee and baked goods.

The combination matters because of the format chosen: Granier’s arrival is linked to another retailer’s opening. The collaboration brings different activities together in one location, rather than simply introducing a standalone bakery.

This arrangement offers a concrete example of how a franchise brand can participate in a shared retail offering. Its performance will need to be assessed against operating results, rather than solely against the aims expressed at the opening.

What to check before entering a similar partnership

Entrepreneurs considering this type of agreement should distinguish between the host chain, the incoming brand and its master franchisee. Before investing, they should establish who operates each space, what brand rights the contract covers, and how responsibilities for customer service and supply are allocated.

Practical takeaway: the Barquisimeto opening is a specific collaboration between Maraplus and Granier. Anyone considering a similar shared format should examine the partnership’s contractual and operational scope, without assuming that an opening means franchise opportunities are available.
