Restaurants in Guatemala: what four chains reveal

The store locators for McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Wendy’s and TGI Fridays provide a snapshot of these brands’ presence in Guatemala as at 1 November 2026. Published by Living in Guatemala using the chains’ websites, the count offers a useful reference for the franchise sector, although readers need to distinguish between formats, geographical coverage and what each figure includes.

Four brands, figures with different scopes

According to the review, McDonald’s listed 119 restaurants in Guatemala, while Wendy’s had 28 and TGI Fridays three. Pizza Hut provided a different breakdown: 36 restaurants and 14 delivery or express outlets.

This distinction matters. Pizza Hut’s 14 additional outlets are not classified as restaurants in the count, so comparing them with other brands’ outlets without that qualification could give a misleading picture of its market presence.

The figures reflect what the store locators showed on a specific date. They are not an annual tally of openings, nor do they establish, on their own, how much each chain grew during 2026. They also do not specify how many outlets fall under each ownership or operating model.

For the franchise sector, their value lies in providing a reference point for the presence visible to consumers, rather than a comprehensive ranking of the Guatemalan market.

Coverage extends beyond the capital

The review also records locations outside Guatemala City. For McDonald’s, it mentions Antigua Guatemala, Cobán, Puerto Barrios, Zacapa, Esquipulas, Salamá, San Marcos and Quetzaltenango, among other places.

For Wendy’s, the review identifies a presence in Antigua Guatemala, Quetzaltenango, Huehuetenango, Cobán, Puerto Barrios and Petén, as well as other locations. For Pizza Hut, it records 21 city labels beyond the capital, with references ranging from Flores and San Benito to Retalhuleu.

The locations show that these chains’ presence is not confined to the capital, but the list does not provide a comparable breakdown by department, Guatemala’s administrative regions. It therefore cannot be used to calculate each brand’s geographical concentration or identify which city has the most outlets outside the capital area.

For anyone assessing a business location, these references offer a starting point for reviewing the existing offer. They are no substitute for checking formats, opening hours, delivery areas and nearby competitors locally.

Store locators do not provide counts for every network

The same publication includes other brands with Guatemalan websites, but does not present comparable figures for all of them. Taco Bell displayed a distance-based list without an overall total; locations cited include Villa Nueva and San Miguel Petapa.

KFC also had a website for orders and promotions, although the review did not provide an outlet count. Domino’s used a search-based store locator, and no overall figure was recorded for that chain either.

These differences define the scope of the exercise. The absence of a figure in the publication does not mean an absence of restaurants, nor does it justify ranking those brands below chains with listings that can be counted.

For the same reason, adding together only the available figures would not produce a representative total for Guatemala’s food franchise sector. It would be a partial aggregation of selected brands and different formats.

How to interpret the data for a business decision

Living in Guatemala states that it included only chains whose Guatemalan websites or store locators could be accessed. It also notes that counts change as outlets open or close. This methodology makes it essential to retain the date alongside any comparison.

The count does not include sales, investment per outlet, profitability or the terms for acquiring a franchise. Outlet numbers alone therefore do not demonstrate the financial appeal of an opportunity or the availability of territories for new operators.

The practical conclusion for the franchise sector is straightforward: use these figures as a dated snapshot of market presence. Before making decisions, confirm each location with the brand, distinguish restaurants from delivery formats, and request specific information on operations and investment.
