Franchise marketing: how to test lead generation channels

An established business may already have advertising that successfully attracts customers. But it will not necessarily help you find franchise partners: buying a product and deciding to open an outlet of your own call for different arguments. Before scaling up your franchise marketing, run a small, controlled test. The aim is to find out where you can reach potential franchisees and which spending actually leads to meaningful discussions.

1. Define an offer for one audience

Do not start by advertising across every directory, social network and advertising platform at once. First, choose one group of potential partners that suits your model. This might be established entrepreneurs with experience of managing staff, or owners of related businesses looking to add another business format.

This is not a franchisee selection process; it is about defining a hypothesis to test through advertising. You need to understand who the offer is for, what need it addresses and why someone should want to continue the conversation.

Write your hypothesis in a single sentence: ‘We offer owners of established service businesses the opportunity to open an additional outlet under our brand, using proven processes.’ Then define the parameters: location, the level of owner involvement required, and requirements for experience and available capital.

Prepare a dedicated landing page for the test. It should clearly explain:

  • what kind of business the partner will run;
  • what they receive from the franchisor;
  • which responsibilities remain theirs;
  • what makes up the start-up costs;
  • what next step the visitor is invited to take.

Do not replace a description of the business with slogans about financial freedom. If the model requires the owner to work in the business every day, make that clear before they submit an enquiry. Otherwise, the advertising will attract people expecting passive income, and your team will spend time correcting those expectations.

2. Check advertising claims and legal requirements

In Russia, commercial concession relationships are governed by Chapter 54 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, while intellectual property rights are governed by Part Four of the Code. There is no single, standalone franchising law, but that does not mean these contractual relationships are free from specific regulation.

Under Article 1027 of the Civil Code, the bundle of rights granted under a commercial concession agreement includes the right to use a trade mark or service mark. Under Article 1028, it is the grant of the right to use this bundle of exclusive rights that requires state registration, not simply a document entitled ‘franchise agreement’. An advertising page does not itself grant any such rights.

Franchise advertising is subject to Federal Law No. 38-FZ ‘On Advertising’. Article 5 requires advertising to be fair and accurate. Before launching a campaign, therefore, gather evidence to support material claims, including the number of operating outlets, the support provided, the company’s experience and the performance of company-owned outlets.

Check claims about profit and payback periods particularly carefully. You cannot present one outlet’s results, without explanation, as a guaranteed outcome for every partner. Specify which outlet and period the figure relates to, which costs are included and what assumptions underpin the calculation. If a short advertising format cannot accommodate important qualifications, it is better to leave out a bold numerical promise.

For online advertising, take account of Article 18.1 of the advertising law: where required by law, advertisements must be labelled, carry an identifier and have information submitted through an advertising data operator. Your contract with the platform or agency should allocate responsibility for these tasks and for checking that they have been completed. Separately, check that your enquiry form complies with Federal Law No. 152-FZ ‘On Personal Data’, including having a privacy policy, a lawful basis for processing and any necessary consent.

3. Structure the test so that results are comparable

Choose a few channels that attract prospects in different ways: search advertising for relevant queries, a listing in a franchise directory or a specialist event for entrepreneurs. Do not declare a winner based solely on the number of completed forms.

For each channel, set a budget, an observation period and criteria for a qualified enquiry in advance. For example, the person understands the business format, is considering a region where the franchise is available and is willing to discuss their own involvement in management.

Use a consistent tracking process:

  • record the source of every enquiry;
  • remove duplicates and spam;
  • record the date of the first response;
  • log conversations and meetings that actually take place;
  • note why discussions end.

Use the same core offer and a comparable process for handling enquiries. If leads from one channel receive an immediate reply while those from another are left unattended, you are comparing your sales team’s performance, not your advertising.

Initially, change one significant element at a time: the audience, the advert or the landing page. Changing everything at once will make it impossible to identify what caused an improvement. At the same time, do not keep clearly unsuccessful advertising running simply to finish the test: a stream of unsuitable enquiries also consumes your team’s resources.

4. Assess marketing by the discussions it generates, not just the enquiries

The cost per enquiry is simple to calculate: divide spending on a channel by the number of unique enquiries. But when deciding whether to scale up, more useful measures are the cost per meaningful conversation and the cost of getting a prospect to a substantive discussion of terms.

Also account for staff time, preparing materials, attending events and agency or contractor fees. Cheap enquiries can prove expensive if most prospects do not understand the model you are offering.

If you receive plenty of enquiries but no meetings take place, check your advertising promises and response times. If meetings happen but candidates regularly decline for the same reason, examine the offer itself. A larger advertising budget will not resolve a mismatch between your audience’s expectations and the terms on offer.

Do not judge a channel solely by contracts signed in the launch month: negotiations may take longer. Compare groups of enquiries over equal observation periods and retain a record of their progress.

Practical takeaway: scale up a proven way of starting meaningful conversations with future partners, not simply the channel with the cheapest enquiries. First, ensure your claims are accurate and your tracking is consistent; then increase spending.
