Pizza Hut is exploring the possibility of opening a new restaurant in Szolnok, Hungary. According to a report published by Szol24 on 16 October, the chain, which currently operates 29 restaurants in Hungary, is seeking well-capitalised local partners to support its expansion outside the capital. For now, the development in Szolnok involves site and market assessments rather than a confirmed restaurant opening: the city has been included in the network’s expansion plans.
Szolnok joins the expansion map
Szolnok is one of the potential locations for Pizza Hut’s nationwide network expansion. According to the report, the chain is also exploring the possibility of opening a restaurant in the city centre. This is significant news for the local franchise community because the chain is seeking business partners for its regional expansion. Its growth ambitions therefore include recruiting partners, rather than focusing solely on company-operated restaurants.
However, it is important to distinguish between a potential opportunity and a confirmed investment. The report gives no address, selected operator or announced opening date for a restaurant in Szolnok. The requirements for establishing a new outlet are still being assessed, so the city’s inclusion in the plans does not, in itself, guarantee an opening.
For interested local businesses, the key development is that Szolnok is no longer simply a city that might, in principle, suit a national chain: Pizza Hut is actively considering a presence there. The next significant step could be an announcement of a specific site, partner or timetable. None of these can yet be treated as confirmed on the basis of the current report.
Population beyond the city boundaries also counts
Outlining the criteria for expansion, Miklós Kozák, director of Pizza Hut Hungary, said that any Hungarian town or city with a population exceeding 50,000, including its surrounding urban area, could be considered. The assessment therefore takes account not only of residents within a city’s administrative boundaries, but also of the population of neighbouring settlements.
According to Szol24, Szolnok and its immediate surroundings meet this population requirement. This explains why the county capital has been included among the potential locations. However, the stated threshold is a selection criterion, not a promise that a restaurant will automatically open in every town or city of a qualifying size.
The company is also assessing the requirements for new outlets and local market demand. The population figure should therefore be seen as one starting point for its expansion plans. For local entrepreneurs, the important point is that the city and its catchment area are assessed together; exceeding a particular population threshold does not, on its own, establish the commercial viability of a restaurant.
Partners sought for an existing franchise network
Pizza Hut’s Hungarian network currently comprises 22 company-operated restaurants and seven franchised outlets. Franchising is therefore already part of its presence in Hungary, although the chain operates the majority of its restaurants itself. The current search for partners is intended to support further growth across this mixed operating model.
The company is continually seeking well-capitalised local partners with whom it can launch new restaurants outside the capital. In this context, Szolnok is not a standalone project separate from the rest of the network, but one of the locations being assessed as part of nationwide expansion. For the franchise community, the news primarily signals a potential new partnership opportunity.
With company-operated and franchised restaurants running alongside one another, it is particularly important to check which model is proposed for any new outlet. In Szolnok’s case, the search for partners is known, but this does not mean that an agreement has already been reached with a local entrepreneur. The seven existing franchised restaurants are part of the current network, not the number of new outlets now being prepared.
Several regional cities are under review
Alongside Szolnok, Pizza Hut is assessing the requirements for new restaurants and market demand in Székesfehérvár, Veszprém, Érd, Tatabánya and Zalaegerszeg. This list illustrates the geographical scope of its expansion assessments: several locations outside the capital are being considered at the same time. It does not, however, amount to a confirmed opening programme covering every city listed.
The potential opportunity in Szolnok should therefore be viewed alongside the other locations under assessment, but separately from developments that have been announced in more concrete terms. The intention to expand the network, the population criterion and the search for local partners are known; the details of a Szolnok restaurant have not yet been formally confirmed.
Practical takeaway: for entrepreneurs in Szolnok, this may be an opportunity to make contact, rather than a firm investment proposition. Interested parties should discuss the site, operating model and partnership terms directly with the company before basing any business decision on a potential opening.
