Last Update shop closes as company behind the brand enters liquidation

The last Update shop has closed, while Update Market Kereskedőház Zrt., the company that took over the brand in 2023, has entered liquidation. According to a report published by Hungarian newspaper Blikk on 6 November, this marks the end of a network that once comprised 112 franchise shops. For those considering a franchise investment in Hungary, the case highlights the importance of the central company's financial health and the network's ability to maintain operations.

Closure of the last shop marks the end of the network

The news of the former Norbi Update network's demise brings together two related developments: the closure of its last shop and the liquidation of the company that took over the brand. According to Blikk, an insolvency petition was filed with Szekszárd Regional Court on 26 March 2026. The court issued a final liquidation order on 28 October.

Update Market Kereskedőház Zrt. took over the brand in 2023. The current proceedings concern this company, and the reported financial figures also relate to it. This is an important distinction when examining a franchise network whose shops and brand operator cannot automatically be treated as a single business entity.

The figure of 112 shops reflects the network's former size, not the number of shops that closed at the same time. The November report concerns the closure of the final outlet. The story is therefore not about another local closure, but the complete disappearance of a once nationwide retail network.

The court ruling in late October marks a legal milestone, while the closure of the last shop is the endpoint visible to customers. The two events should also be understood separately: the closure of the retail network and the company's liquidation proceedings are not the same thing.

Cash reserves dwindled despite reported profits

At first glance, the published figures for 2025 do not suggest a loss-making company. Update Market recorded net turnover of HUF 747.3 million and a profit after tax of HUF 164.5 million. Other financial indicators, however, pointed to considerable strain.

According to the figures reported by Blikk, cash holdings fell from HUF 196.6 million to HUF 4.3 million in a year. Meanwhile, current liabilities reached HUF 366.3 million. Profit and available cash therefore painted very different pictures of the same business.

These figures alone do not establish precisely which business decisions or payments caused the decline in cash holdings. They do, however, demonstrate that profit recorded in the income statement is not the same as money immediately available to pay bills. Assessing a company's ability to meet its obligations therefore requires a broader view than turnover and profit after tax alone.

For franchisees, this is a significant distinction. Brand recognition, the network's former shop count or the central company's profitability cannot, on their own, establish how secure the financial foundations of the operation are. In Update's case, the sharp fall in cash holdings alongside a positive reported result is particularly noteworthy.

Repeated enforcement action preceded liquidation

The financial difficulties were accompanied by several regulatory proceedings. The company lost its reliable taxpayer status under Hungary's tax system in November 2024. According to the report, Hungary's National Tax and Customs Administration first ordered enforcement action against it that same month, followed by further action in autumn 2025, spring 2026 and August 2026.

The chronology shows that this was not a single enforcement measure taken immediately before the closure. Enforcement action recurred in the period leading up to liquidation. These measures should not, however, be conflated with the October court ruling: the report describes the tax authority's actions and the liquidation order as separate events.

The decline in operations is also reflected in staffing levels. By autumn 2026, the company, which had previously employed 16 people, had just one employee left. This figure relates to the company that took over the brand, not the combined workforce of the former franchise shops. The distinction matters because employment figures for the central company and independently operated franchise outlets are not interchangeable.

What should prospective franchisees look out for?

The practical lesson from Update's story is not that a single financial indicator can predict a network's fate. Quite the opposite: the figures presented make the case for assessing several factors together, rather than relying solely on a brand's former scale or its reported profits.

Before entering into a franchise agreement, prospective partners should review the contracting company's financial statements, cash resources, current liabilities and publicly available records of legal and enforcement proceedings. It is equally important to establish exactly which company will be responsible for fulfilling the contractual obligations. A general impression of the network is no substitute for assessing the financial position of the specific business behind a familiar brand name.

Practical takeaway: when joining a network or renewing an agreement, look beyond the business proposition. Checking the central company's current ability to meet its financial obligations should also form part of the decision.
