AB Vassilopoulos: The Breakdown of Its 508 Planned Franchise Stores

AB Vassilopoulos has divided its franchise network growth target for the end of 2026 between two distinct store formats. According to the company announcement published on 2 November, the plan comprises 336 AB Shop & Go and 172 AB Synergatis stores: a total of 508 outlets, with each format intended to serve different types of location.

The figures refer to the December target

AB aims to exceed 500 partner-operated stores by the end of 2026. This is therefore the intended number of outlets at year-end, rather than a count of stores already operating on the date of the announcement.

This distinction matters when assessing the network’s development. The breakdown of 336 and 172 stores adds up to 508 outlets, giving a precise figure for the company’s broader reference to more than 500. These numbers describe the total planned network across the two formats, not the number of new stores to be added during the year.

In an earlier presentation of its programme for 2026, the company had planned to open 100 new franchise stores, as a report in the Greek newspaper To Pontiki on 3 November recalls. That plan prioritised urban and tourist areas. New openings and the total size of the network are separate measures and should not be confused.

Two formats serving different locations

AB Shop & Go accounts for the larger share of the planned network, with 336 outlets. According to AB, these stores are intended mainly for urban areas and high-footfall locations. The emphasis is on everyday shopping close to home or work.

The 172 AB Synergatis stores — whose name means ‘AB Partner’ — have a different geographical focus. This format supports the chain’s presence in smaller towns, islands, tourist destinations and local markets. Expansion under the same retail brand is therefore not limited to a single type of location.

The significance of the breakdown lies not simply in which format has more outlets, but also in the different role the company assigns to each franchise model: an urban presence and high-footfall locations for AB Shop & Go, and broader geographical coverage for AB Synergatis.

For an entrepreneur considering joining the franchise network, this distinction provides a useful initial filter. The proposed location needs to be considered alongside the appropriate store format, rather than basing the decision solely on the chain’s overall size.

The support described by AB

The company says its support for franchisees covers successive stages of setting up and running a store. It begins with premises selection and store design, then continues through training and day-to-day operations.

In its announcement, AB describes the provision of know-how, tools and support as part of its relationship with franchise partners. It also links network growth to supporting local entrepreneurship and maintaining stable partnerships.

The local entrepreneur is central to this approach. As the To Pontiki report also notes, franchising allows the business to draw on the franchisee’s knowledge of the local market. Company support and local knowledge are thus presented as complementary elements of growth; the numerical target alone does not provide an assessment of any individual investment.

What prospective franchise partners should consider

The announcement gives Greece’s franchise sector a specific network target and a clear breakdown by format. To assess a potential partnership, however, a useful next step is to relate these figures to particular premises and a specific local market.

Prospective franchisees can request detailed information on which format is recommended for their chosen area, how premises selection and store design are organised, and what the training and day-to-day support described by the company involve in practice.

Practical takeaway: The target of 508 outlets indicates the intended scale of the network. Choosing a franchise partnership should begin by matching the location, store format and specific terms of support.
