Accor has added two existing hotels in Hildesheim and Saarbrücken to its brand network through franchise agreements. Since 2 November 2026, a total of 352 rooms have come under the Mercure and ibis Styles brands. Hamburg-based B&L Group operates both properties. For those considering the German franchise market, the expansion illustrates how existing hotels can join an international system by changing brands.
Two locations, two brands, one operator
The Mercure Hildesheim Center brings 150 rooms into the Accor network. The ibis Styles Saarbrücken Center adds a further 202 rooms. Accor announced the addition of the two properties on 3 November; L’Express Franchise reported on the franchise agreements on 5 November 2026.
Behind both hotels is Hamburg-based B&L Group, a property and investment specialist that has been in business for more than 55 years. The company operates the hotels itself as a franchisee. These are therefore not two newly built Accor hotels, but existing businesses joining the Mercure and ibis Styles brands.
The collaboration between Accor and B&L extends beyond these two locations. It also includes three planned hotels in Hamburg’s ÜberseeQuartier district. The addition of the Hildesheim and Saarbrücken properties thus expands a partnership that covers further hotel projects. The Hamburg schemes should be distinguished from the hotels that have already joined the network: they are described as planned developments.
Growth through rebranding rather than new builds
Accor describes conversions and rebranding as an increasingly important route to growth. This means bringing existing hotels into its brand network. The two German properties provide a concrete example: their locations and operator remain unchanged, while they gain access to the group’s brands and distribution channels.
This distinction is essential to understanding the announcement. The 352 rooms expand Accor’s German network, but do not represent 352 newly created hotel rooms. Growth here relates to the group’s brand presence and the accommodation available through its network. A change of brand therefore does not automatically imply a corresponding increase in total accommodation capacity in the two cities.
The agreement also illustrates a route into franchising that does not start with setting up a new business. B&L is bringing operating hotels into the partnership and will continue to run them. For existing hotel businesses, joining a franchise can therefore be a decision about the future brand and distribution arrangements for an established property.
Booking platform complements the hotel brands
The switch gives the hotels access to Accor’s brands and distribution platform. This includes ALL Accor, the company’s booking and loyalty programme, which aims to encourage direct bookings and build longer-term guest loyalty.
Joining the network therefore involves more than putting a new name on the building. Alongside the individual hotel brand, the model includes integration into a shared booking and customer loyalty system. In these two cases, B&L retains operational responsibility as the franchisee, while Accor, as franchisor, provides access to its brands and distribution channels.
However, the programme’s intended benefits should be distinguished from results already achieved. The aim of increasing direct bookings and strengthening guest loyalty does not yet demonstrate any specific improvement for the hotels in Hildesheim and Saarbrücken. When assessing the partnership, these objectives should therefore be treated as part of the promised benefits, rather than evidence of higher occupancy or profitability.
More German hotels in the development pipeline
Accor says it currently has a further 30 hotels in its German development pipeline. This figure refers to planned developments and should not be confused with hotels that are already open. Nor does it establish that every project will follow the same franchise or conversion model as the two properties that have just joined the network.
For those interested in franchising in Germany, the significance of this announcement lies primarily in the approach taken: an established operator is bringing two operating hotels, under different brands, into the same international system. The agreements illustrate a route to growth that starts with existing properties.
Practical takeaway: Independent hotel operators considering a similar move should ask franchise brands specifically about commercial terms, refurbishment requirements and distribution services. What matters is which requirements and services are actually agreed for their own property.
