R-kioski revamp to create 30 Ärrä kiosks this autumn
Reitan is revamping its Finnish kiosk network and pursuing growth through three brands. The 30 Ärrä kiosks planned for this autumn will be converted from existing R-kioski outlets.

The R-kioski revamp is introducing a second kiosk concept to Finland’s franchising sector. According to a report published by Finnish business newspaper Kauppalehti on 28 September 2026, Reitan Convenience is seeking growth in Finland through three brands: R-kioski, Ärrä and the new Nivo café chain. The 30 Ärrä kiosks due to open this autumn will be created by refurbishing existing R-kioski outlets, rather than, according to the report, adding entirely new locations to the kiosk network.
From one kiosk concept to two
Reitan Convenience, the Norwegian owner of the established R-kioski chain, has restructured its Finnish operations. Instead of a single kiosk format, it now has two distinct concepts: R-kioski and the new Ärrä kiosks. Alongside these, the company has launched Nivo, an entirely new café chain.
This is therefore not simply a nationwide rebranding of R-kioski. In the strategy described by Kauppalehti, R-kioski and Ärrä operate alongside one another. R-kioski remains part of the portfolio, although some of its existing outlets are being refurbished as Ärrä kiosks. The third brand, Nivo, is a café chain rather than another new kiosk brand.
Reitan is using these three brands to pursue renewed growth in Finland. However, that ambition should be distinguished from results already achieved. The available report sets out the strategic direction and autumn opening plans, but provides no figures on the revamp’s impact on sales, profitability or customer numbers. Its commercial success cannot yet be assessed on this evidence.
For the franchising sector, the key point is that these concepts coexist: under the same owner, two kiosk concepts are predominantly franchisee-run, while the café brand’s outlets are company-owned. It is therefore important to distinguish between the brand and its operating model when assessing the changes.
Ärrä kiosks planned for several Finnish cities
According to Kauppalehti, Reitan will open 30 new Ärrä kiosks this autumn by refurbishing existing R-kioski outlets. In addition to Helsinki, Ärrä kiosks are planned for Pori, Vantaa, Oulu and Tampere. Other cities, including Jyväskylä and Turku, will follow later in the autumn.
This list shows that the revamp is not confined to Helsinki or the capital region. The new concept is being rolled out across several Finnish cities during the same autumn. However, the report does not specify how many Ärrä kiosks each city will receive or give exact opening dates for every outlet. It is therefore not possible to draw firmer conclusions about the scale of the rollout in individual cities.
When interpreting the opening figure, the outlets’ origins are an important detail. Although 30 new Ärrä kiosks are being opened, the report says they will be created by converting existing R-kioski premises to the new concept. The figure therefore measures the rollout of Ärrä, not necessarily net growth across the kiosk network as a whole.
This distinction also matters when following local opening announcements. A new name and refurbished premises may be part of an upgrade to the existing network. The number of Ärrä openings alone does not indicate how much Reitan’s total kiosk count in Finland will change. The available material gives no total for the network before or after the revamp.
Franchisee-run kiosks, company-owned cafés
Ärrä and R-kioski share the same principal operating model. According to Kauppalehti, both are run predominantly by independent retailers operating as franchisees. The new kiosk concept therefore sits within the same largely franchisee-run business as the established R-kioski brand.
The word “predominantly” matters here. The report does not say that every kiosk under either brand is operated by a franchisee. Nor does it provide a breakdown of franchisee-run outlets and any other types of outlet. The information available establishes the main operating model, but not its exact share of the network.
Nivo has a different ownership model. The new café chain’s outlets are owned by Reitan Convenience Finland. Based on this report, Nivo’s launch should therefore not be described as the opening of new franchised cafés or a franchisee recruitment initiative. It forms part of the same three-brand strategy, but follows a different ownership model.
For the franchising sector, this is a timely example of why news about a chain’s brands does not always amount to news about franchise opportunities. In this case, the kiosk revamp concerns concepts that depend primarily on franchisees. The café chain, by contrast, expands Reitan’s brand portfolio through company-owned outlets.
What should prospective operators watch?
A key question for coverage this autumn is how the plan to open 30 Ärrä kiosks progresses. Kauppalehti’s report gives the planned number and names several locations, but does not confirm that all the openings have already taken place. Future reporting should therefore continue to distinguish between planned conversions and completed work.
Another point to watch is how the two kiosk concepts develop alongside each other. It is clear that both R-kioski and Ärrä form part of Reitan’s Finnish strategy. However, the available material does not explain all the practical differences between them or the criteria used to select an outlet for conversion to Ärrä. These details cannot reasonably be inferred from the separate branding alone.
The material also provides no information on franchise agreement terms, franchisees’ investment requirements or how refurbishment costs are shared. Prospective franchisees interested in the revamp should therefore distinguish between the announced concept plans and the terms that might apply to their own business. The three-brand strategy alone does not answer these questions.
Practical takeaway: When following Ärrä openings, track concept conversions separately from actual network growth. Prospective franchisees should also check which brand and operating model each announcement concerns.
