September’s news from Finland’s franchise sector highlights both international recognition and local changes. Kultapalat won bronze at the European Franchise Awards, SeniorShop announced a new franchisee for northern Finland, and Bröner opened a restaurant in Helsinki’s Ruoholahti district. These stories cover three distinct developments: an award for a franchise brand, a stronger franchisee network, and a business continuing under a new brand after the previous chain’s restaurants closed.
Kultapalat wins an award in Brussels
Kultapalat won bronze in the Emerging Franchise Brand category at the European Franchise Awards in Brussels on 17 September 2026. Franchise News reported the award the following day. Organised by the European Franchise Federation, the awards were held for the fifth time.
The international award was Kultapalat’s second accolade of the year. In spring 2026, it was named Franchise Chain of the Year at the Finnish Franchising Association’s Franny Awards. The chain has therefore received recognition both in Finland and at European level in the same year.
Finland was also represented in Brussels by Kevi Akreyi, a franchisee with care services chain Alina. He was nominated for the European franchisee of the year award, having been named Franchisee of the Year at the Franny Awards that spring.
It is important to distinguish between these results: Kultapalat won bronze in its category, while the news about Akreyi concerns his nomination for a European franchisee award. Both had already received recognition in Finland earlier that year.
For Finland’s franchise sector, the story highlights two different perspectives. Kultapalat’s award recognises the chain, while Akreyi’s nomination recognises an individual franchisee. The achievements of a chain and those of a franchisee are not the same, even when both feature at the same European event. The award report contains no details of new Kultapalat outlets or an expansion timetable, so it should not be read as an announcement of new openings.
SeniorShop welcomes a new franchisee in northern Finland
Clothing retailer SeniorShop is strengthening its network with Heli Kinnunen, who will start as a franchisee in northern Finland in autumn 2026. Franchise News published the announcement on 10 September. Kinnunen’s territory covers the Oulu area and several other northern locations.
The announced territory includes the Koillismaa region and locations such as Kuusamo, Pudasjärvi, Taivalkoski, Puolanka, Suomussalmi and Hyrynsalmi. In the Oulu area, it covers Oulu itself as well as Hailuoto, Ii, Kempele, Liminka, Lumijoki, Muhos, Tyrnävä and Utajärvi, among others.
This is therefore more than a new franchisee starting in a single town. The announced territory spans several municipalities, making its scope a key part of the story. For customers, the main question is whether their own locality is included; for prospective franchisees, the notable point is the size of the territory allocated to one operator.
The announcement places the start in autumn 2026. It does not specify an exact start date, schedules for individual locations or the opening of a new permanent shop. The news is therefore primarily about strengthening the franchisee network and defining Kinnunen’s future territory, rather than confirming a number of new shops.
SeniorShop’s expansion should be described only as far as the published information supports: a new franchisee is joining the chain in northern Finland. The report does not say whether the entire territory is new to the chain or how responsibilities were previously allocated.
Bröner opens on the former Dif Döner site
In Helsinki’s Ruoholahti district, a change of chain is visible at the restaurant entrance. Helsingin Uutiset reported on 10 September that a Bröner restaurant had opened in the former Dif Döner premises on Itämerenkatu. It is run by the same franchisee who operated the previous Ruoholahti Dif Döner.
The change follows the bankruptcy of Think Drink, the company behind Dif Döner. According to Helsingin Uutiset, all Dif Döner restaurants closed as a result. The Ruoholahti restaurant had previously attracted local attention: the newspaper’s readers voted it Helsinki’s fifth-best kebab restaurant in 2024.
Bröner was founded on Helsinki’s Vaasankatu in 2024. According to the September report, the chain had four restaurants. Alongside Ruoholahti and Vaasankatu, its locations were Helsinki Central Railway Station and Helsinki Airport.
The chain’s original ambition had been to open as many as 30 restaurants across Finland. That target must, however, be kept separate from the actual restaurant count: the confirmed total at the time of the report was four. The published information gives no locations or dates for subsequent openings.
In Ruoholahti, the franchisee provides continuity, but the chain has changed. The news does not mean that Dif Döner is continuing unchanged; it means that a Bröner restaurant has opened on its former site. Nor does the published information establish that the same chain has taken over any other closed Dif Döner locations.
What should readers take from September’s news?
Change is the common thread in these three stories, but they do not measure the same thing. For Kultapalat, the news is an award; for SeniorShop, it is a new franchisee joining; and for Bröner, it is an opening involving a change of brand at an existing restaurant site. These stories alone cannot establish the growth rate or financial health of Finland’s franchise sector as a whole.
For anyone considering becoming a franchisee, the distinctions have practical value. An award offers a reason to explore a chain, but it does not replace an assessment of the agreement and the business. News of a regional franchisee appointment draws attention to territory boundaries. A change of chain, meanwhile, is a reminder to distinguish between the local franchisee and the company behind the brand.
Practical tip: whenever you read franchise news, check what has already happened, what has merely been announced and what remains a long-term ambition. This helps put awards, franchisee appointments and restaurant openings into perspective.
