Miss Universe Singapore to Miss 2026 Final Over Franchise Dispute

Miss Universe Singapore Vion Erico Tan will not compete at the international pageant in Puerto Rico on 24 November 2026, as a dispute over franchise authority moves from contested eligibility to confirmed non-participation. Singapore’s organisers have backed the decision and intend to continue preparing Tan with a view to the 2027 competition.

Six representatives will not make the trip

Miss Grand International (MGI) announced the decision on 21 October following consultation with the relevant parties, national organisations and six representatives, The Straits Times reported. Alongside Singapore, the affected representatives are from Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Laos.

MGI said the representatives would retain their national titles and continue carrying out their responsibilities in their respective countries. Their absence from Puerto Rico therefore does not end their domestic roles.

The announcement comes ahead of rehearsals and promotional events scheduled to begin in Puerto Rico on 8 November, according to Mothership. The grand finale is scheduled for 24 November.

MGI framed its decision around the treatment of the delegates, saying it could no longer reasonably send them under conditions that adequately protected their status, dignity, safety and equal treatment. It also said it respected Puerto Rico and its people and did not want the host destination unfairly affected by an unrelated corporate dispute.

Singapore organisers turn towards 2027

The Miss Universe Singapore Organisation said on 22 October that it acknowledged and fully supported the decision. Its team had been actively preparing Tan for the Puerto Rico competition.

The organisation now intends to continue those preparations with the aim of representing Singapore at Miss Universe 2027 in a different host country, Mothership reported. That is a stated ambition, rather than a confirmed place in the next international competition.

Tan’s national title remains in place under MGI’s announcement. The distinction matters: the immediate change concerns participation in the 2026 international event, while national responsibilities are set to continue.

The latest decision also marks a clear change from preparations continuing against a backdrop of disputed eligibility. There is now a stated decision not to send the six representatives to Puerto Rico, even as the organisations involved maintain their positions on the underlying contractual arrangements.

Competing claims over franchise authority

The disagreement centres on who can authorise national franchise arrangements, which allow local organisations to select and send representatives to Miss Universe.

In September, JKN Universe, which holds the legal rights and licensing to the Miss Universe brand and operates as the Miss Universe Organization, said it did not recognise the franchise agreements covering the six South-east Asian countries, The Straits Times reported.

JKN Universe maintained that it held legal authority over licences, sponsorships and franchise contracts. It therefore regarded agreements made with or through Thai pageant director Nawat Itsaragrisil and his affiliations as invalid.

Nawat, who heads both MGI and Miss Universe Eastern, disputed that position. At a press conference on 18 September, he said the exclusion notice had no legal effect, according to The Straits Times. Singapore’s local pageant had been run under a licence issued by Miss Universe Eastern.

In a separate statement dated 18 September, Miss Universe Eastern acknowledged JKN Universe LLC’s ownership of the brand but maintained that it held exclusive operating and development rights across 95 Eastern territories, including authority to appoint franchise partners. It argued that valid agreements could not be cancelled through a unilateral statement.

Non-participation does not settle the dispute

MGI expressly stated that the representatives’ non-participation did not constitute voluntary withdrawal or a surrender of its contractual rights. It said it would continue defending the interests of the delegates and the company, including through possible legal action.

The decision therefore resolves the immediate question of whether Tan will travel to compete, but not the competing claims about franchise authority. Nor does the Singapore organisation’s intention to prepare for 2027 establish that next year’s participation has been secured.

For Singapore’s franchise community, the practical takeaway is to distinguish permission to operate locally from recognition by the wider brand system. Before committing to an international event or related expenditure, franchise partners should verify both the authority behind their licence and the approvals needed to participate.
