McDonald’s reaches 500-restaurant milestone as café networks expand

Recent expansion news from India’s restaurant and café brands highlights both major network milestones and openings in new locations. According to a FranchiseTv report dated 29 October 2026, McDonald’s has passed the 500-restaurant milestone in western and southern India. The same news round-up also covers new outlets from Barista, Third Wave Coffee and Happitea. For those exploring the franchise market, it is important to distinguish between network expansion and actual franchise opportunities.

McDonald’s milestone covers two regions only

McDonald’s achievement relates to its restaurant network in western and southern India. The 500-restaurant milestone should therefore not be treated as a figure for its entire Indian network. The report explicitly identifies these two regions, which define the scope of the announcement.

The figure indicates growth in the operating restaurant network, but does not in itself mean that franchise applications are open to new investors. Nor should the restaurant count be taken as evidence of an individual outlet’s sales, profitability or return on investment.

For entrepreneurs exploring franchise opportunities, the useful takeaway is to put the figure in its proper context. The size of a brand’s presence and the rights available to anyone wishing to do business with it are separate questions. What this report establishes is a regional network milestone for McDonald’s, not a new public franchise offer.

New café network milestones in Kolkata and Lucknow

Barista Coffee has opened a new outlet in Salt Lake, Kolkata, bringing its network to 555 cafés. The announcement combines a local opening with a figure for the brand’s total café network. The new Salt Lake café forms part of that expansion.

Meanwhile, Third Wave Coffee has opened its 250th café in Hazratganj, Lucknow. Here, too, the report pairs an opening at a specific location with a numerical network milestone. Both brands are reporting actual café openings, rather than simply plans for future expansion.

These figures should be compared with care. The totals of 555 and 250 refer to the respective brands’ café networks, while the McDonald’s announcement concerns restaurants in western and southern India. Given the different formats and geographical coverage, they should not be used as a direct comparison of market share.

For entrepreneurs, the practical value of these openings lies in identifying locations attracting café brands. Salt Lake in Kolkata and Hazratganj in Lucknow both feature in the latest opening announcements. However, the presence of an established brand alone cannot determine demand or profitability for another business in the same area.

Happitea: a new outlet and franchise agreements

The same news round-up reports that Happitea has opened a new outlet at Kemps Corner in South Mumbai. The brand entered India through a master franchise partnership with FranGlobal. It is also reported to have 35 franchise agreements across eight states.

This provides an explicit franchise partnership context. Even so, 35 agreements should not be described as 35 operating outlets. Signing an agreement and starting operations at the relevant location are different stages. The Kemps Corner announcement concerns an opening; the agreement count provides a separate piece of information.

Prospective partners should pay attention to this distinction. When speaking to the brand, it would be useful to request separate lists of signed agreements, sites under development and outlets that are actually open. This can help investors assess expansion announcements against the operational reality.

Turning expansion news into an investment decision

These announcements contain three types of information: a regional restaurant network milestone, new café openings and a count of franchise agreements. It is better to assess each separately rather than treat them as equivalent business indicators.

Before proceeding with any proposal, obtain written clarification of available locations, the scope of the agreement, total investment, ongoing fees and operational responsibilities. Alongside the number of existing outlets, ask for details of their ownership and operating arrangements.

Practical takeaway: Large networks and new openings provide a starting point for research. Base any franchise investment decision on location-specific costs, verified business figures and a clear contract.
