Carrefour opens second Indian store in Ghaziabad, targets 50

Carrefour opened its second Indian store in Ghaziabad on 15 October. Following its first outlet in Greater Noida West, the opening expands the company’s presence in the National Capital Region (NCR), which includes Delhi and surrounding areas. The French retailer, which entered the Indian market through a franchise partnership with Dubai-based Apparel Group, plans to grow its network to 50 stores nationwide over the next five years.

Expansion begins in the NCR

According to a BW Hindi report published on 19 October 2026, Carrefour’s current strategy focuses on strengthening its physical store network. Its first two outlets, in Greater Noida West and Ghaziabad, are steps towards that goal. The company is now exploring opportunities in other cities alongside efforts to consolidate its presence in the NCR.

It is important to distinguish between these two openings and the five-year target. The Ghaziabad store is a completed expansion milestone, whereas the 50-store figure is a future ambition. It should not be read as the number of stores currently operating or as confirmation of all proposed locations.

For those interested in India’s franchise market, the key development is that stores have actually opened under the Carrefour–Apparel Group partnership. This is more than a market-entry announcement: the company now has a physical presence at its first two locations. However, the report provides no detailed timetable for the further rollout.

Delhi, Mumbai and smaller cities in view

Carrefour is exploring expansion opportunities in Delhi and Mumbai. Tier-two and tier-three cities — India’s smaller urban markets — are also among its potential destinations. The plan therefore extends beyond the NCR, although the initial store network is taking shape in that region.

The company has not announced firm opening dates for Delhi or Mumbai. Naming these cities does not mean that a particular site or opening schedule has been confirmed. For prospective business partners, the distinction between exploring opportunities and formally announcing a store opening is important.

Similarly, the target of 50 stores within five years does not imply an equal number of openings each year. The available details include neither annual targets nor a city-by-city breakdown. For those tracking the expansion, the next useful signal will be an announcement of a new location, an opening date or a confirmed phase of the rollout.

Acquisitions also under consideration

Carrefour is not limiting its options to opening new stores. The company is also considering acquiring existing retail networks. The report does not identify any potential acquisition target, deal value or announced agreement. For now, this should therefore be viewed only as a strategic option under consideration.

The company is also exploring quick commerce — rapid on-demand delivery — and opportunities to source fashion and footwear products from India. These possibilities are being discussed alongside physical store expansion, but no firm launch dates or operating arrangements have been disclosed. The clear priority at present is to strengthen the physical store network.

Opening stores, acquiring an existing network and increasing product sourcing should not be treated as the same activity. They are distinct business avenues. Further announcements from Carrefour will clarify which of these options translate into concrete action.

What this means for the franchise community

The expansion is taking place under a franchise partnership with Apparel Group. However, the report contains no details of applications for independent investors, investment requirements, fees or any sub-franchise offering. The 50-store target should therefore not, in itself, be interpreted as an open invitation to invest in an individual franchise.

Practical takeaway: When assessing Carrefour’s expansion, distinguish between stores already open, announced targets and options still under consideration. Before pursuing any partnership, obtain an authorised offer, the contractual terms and written confirmation of the location.
