McDonald’s opens €6.6m Carrigaline franchise, creating 80 jobs

McDonald’s has opened a €6.6 million restaurant in Carrigaline, Co Cork, creating 80 jobs and bringing its Irish network to 99 locations. Operated by franchisee Jim Ronayne, the opening adds a new Cork site to the brand’s planned nationwide expansion over the next five years.

Carrigaline adds a round-the-clock operation

The new restaurant opened on 21 October on Pottery Road in Carrigaline West, beside Aldi. Cork senior hurler Brian Hayes attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside Ronayne and members of his family.

The 330-square-metre building includes a dual-lane drive-thru, indoor and outdoor seating, and on-site parking. Its 30-space car park includes electric vehicle charging facilities, while bicycle parking is also provided.

Indoor service runs from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week. Both the drive-thru and delivery service operate around the clock, giving the location a trading schedule that extends beyond its dining-room hours.

The opening makes Carrigaline the 11th McDonald’s location in Cork, where the brand first established a presence in the mid-1980s. It is a further investment by an existing franchise operator rather than the arrival of a new operator into the network.

An experienced franchisee expands locally

Ronayne already operates several McDonald’s restaurants across Cork and Tipperary and has worked with the brand for more than 20 years.

Speaking at the opening, he said: “We’re delighted to open our doors in Carrigaline and welcome our first customers.”

He added: “The investment has also created 80 jobs, giving people in the area the opportunity to join our team and build their careers with us.”

The new positions include full-time and part-time crew roles, as well as opportunities in middle and senior management. That mix makes recruitment for the opening broader than front-line restaurant service alone.

According to the Irish Examiner, Ronayne’s franchise is one of 18 that own and operate McDonald’s restaurants in Ireland. Together, the Irish restaurant network directly employs more than 7,500 people.

For Ireland’s franchise community, Carrigaline provides a concrete example of an established multi-site franchisee adding another location within an area where they already operate. The reported €6.6 million investment relates to this particular restaurant; it should not be treated as a standard entry cost for a McDonald’s franchise.

A new opening alongside Cork upgrades

Carrigaline’s arrival follows a major refurbishment of the McDonald’s restaurant in Ballincollig in recent weeks. That project involved a multi-million-euro upgrade to an existing location, rather than an addition to the restaurant count.

The Ballincollig changes included six new double-sided self-service kiosks and a dedicated delivery collection area. Bathroom facilities were refurbished, and the restaurant received a new décor package which the company described as the first of its kind in the Irish market.

Planning permission has also been secured for similar upgrades at the Kinsale Road junction restaurant.

Taken together, the projects show two distinct strands of activity in Cork: opening an additional restaurant in Carrigaline and updating established premises elsewhere. The investment amounts and facilities reported for each project should be kept separate, rather than combined into a single expansion figure.

National ambitions meet local planning requirements

McDonald’s plans to open five restaurants a year in Ireland over the next five years, amounting to 25 new locations. The programme represents approximately €150 million in investment, with the company saying it will create around 1,750 jobs.

Those figures describe the wider planned programme, not jobs or spending already delivered by the Carrigaline opening.

Elsewhere in Cork, a proposed 24-hour drive-thru at Fota Retail & Business Park in Carrigtwohill has been refused planning permission by Cork County Council. The proposed site is zoned for “business and general employment” under the Cork County Development Plan.

Planners determined that the proposed use would depart inappropriately from the zoning objective and materially contravene the development plan. The refusal provides a local counterpoint to Carrigaline’s successful opening: a national growth programme still depends on individual sites securing the necessary permissions.

Practical takeaway: Prospective franchise operators should assess site-specific investment, staffing and operating hours alongside planning suitability. Carrigaline demonstrates an established franchisee’s expansion, while the separate Fota decision underlines why zoning checks belong early in any property assessment.
