AION appoints Shelbourne Motors for Northern Ireland launch

Shelbourne Motors will launch AION at three Northern Ireland locations in early 2027, adding its first new-car franchise in Belfast.

AION appoints Shelbourne Motors for Northern Ireland launch

Chinese electric vehicle brand AION is set to enter Northern Ireland in the first quarter of 2027, with family-owned Shelbourne Motors appointed as its sole retail partner in the north. The launch will cover Belfast, Newry and Portadown, adding a new automotive name to the local franchise community.

Three locations lined up for launch

According to The Irish News, Shelbourne Motors will introduce AION through its showrooms in Belfast, Newry and Portadown. The planned first-quarter launch places the brand’s Northern Ireland arrival between January and March 2027.

The appointment gives Shelbourne sole retail responsibility for the brand in Northern Ireland. Rather than announcing a single launch location, the agreement identifies three places from which the group will bring AION to customers.

That distinction matters when assessing the announcement: this is a confirmed retail partnership with a stated launch period and named locations, rather than a general expression of interest in entering the market. It is, however, still a forthcoming launch, not an announcement that AION vehicles are already on sale at those showrooms.

The geographical scope is also specific. Shelbourne’s appointment covers Northern Ireland; it should not be read as an announcement of retail rights or showroom openings in the Republic of Ireland.

A first new-car franchise for Belfast

Alongside bringing AION to Northern Ireland, the agreement marks a separate milestone for Shelbourne Motors. It will establish the group’s first new-car franchise in Belfast.

The Belfast operation will launch from Shelbourne’s existing SVRgo premises on Old Channel Road in Titanic Quarter. The announcement therefore identifies an existing group location as the base for this part of the rollout, rather than describing a newly built showroom.

For readers following franchise expansion, this is an important part of the story. A new brand entering a territory and an established operator adding a franchise are related developments, but they are not the same thing. Here, the agreement does both: AION gains a Northern Ireland retail partner, while Shelbourne adds its first new-car franchise in Belfast.

Newry and Portadown complete the announced three-location launch. Together, the named sites provide a clear outline of where Shelbourne intends to introduce the brand when the partnership begins trading in early 2027.

AION’s manufacturer and UK connection

AION is the electrified car brand of GAC, a long-established Chinese vehicle manufacturer. Its Northern Ireland arrival follows the launch of its UK business in 2026 through a joint venture between GAC and international automotive distributor Jameel Motors.

The two arrangements describe different parts of the route to market. The GAC and Jameel Motors joint venture established the UK business, while Shelbourne’s appointment provides the announced retail partnership for Northern Ireland.

Keeping those roles distinct helps explain the franchise news without confusing the manufacturer, distributor and local retailer. Shelbourne is the named retail partner that will introduce AION through the three Northern Ireland locations.

The sequence also gives the announcement a clear timetable: a UK business launched in 2026, followed by a Northern Ireland showroom launch planned for the opening quarter of 2027. The local development is therefore a defined next step for the brand, rather than its initial UK business launch.

What the appointment means for franchise watchers

For Ireland’s franchise community, the central development is the appointment of an existing family-owned motor group to introduce a new vehicle brand. The story combines territorial retail rights, a three-location launch and a first new-car franchise for Shelbourne in Belfast.

It is not an invitation for individual applicants to take up an AION franchise. The announced Northern Ireland retail partner has already been selected, making this a network development story rather than an open franchise recruitment opportunity.

Practical takeaway: Anyone tracking AION’s arrival should focus on Shelbourne’s Belfast, Newry and Portadown locations and the first-quarter 2027 launch window. For prospective franchise partners more broadly, the announcement illustrates why territory, operator appointment and opening dates should be checked separately when assessing a new brand’s market entry.
